Serving Blind And Visually Impaired Adults

The Eastside Center for the Blind, a non-profit organization, assists blind and visually impaired adults achieve
independence and self-reliance by providing classes in independent living and pre-vocational services free of charge.
Classes include the following: job-seeking skills, computer training, English as a second language, reading and writing braille,
adjustment to blindness classes, home-making skills and personal correspondence. Work-shops on a variety of subjects
and resources are offered as well. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am to 2pm.


The Center is located at the El Rancho Adult Education Center 9515 Haney Street Room 12, Pico Rivera, California 90660.

About the staff:

People working at the Center are knowledgeable in working with the blind and visually impaired and have teaching experience.

About the director:

Alice Hackney has a secondary teaching credential from UCLA and USC. She taught secondary education for 9 years and worked for the California State Department of Rehabilitation for 29 years as a Counselor/Teacher For The Blind, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor For The Blind, Statewide Training Coordinator For The Blind and Resource Specialist. She has served on the Guide-Dog Board For The Blind, committees on accessibility and has served on the board of directors for agencies working for the blind.
